Easy Toffee Apple Recipe - Use Your Apples - Tree2mydoor

October is here and apple season is truly in full swing! With Halloween just around the corner we think it’s the perfect time to make some delicious, fun treats with the family — so how about some toffee apples?

Red toffee apples

Our easy toffee apple recipe is great fun to make and simple enough that everyone can join in. This recipe will make 15 toffee apples that can be shared with family and enjoyed on Halloween or Bonfire Night.

Toffee Apple Ingredients

  • 15 small apples
  • 15 lolly sticks or wooden skewers
  • 3 cups golden caster sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • (Optional) 2 to 3 drops red food colouring
  • (Optional) 4 tbsp golden syrup

Homemade Toffee Apple Recipe

  1. Gather your apples and remove the stalks. Place them in a large bowl and cover with boiling water to remove any waxy coating.
  2. Push a wooden stick into the stalk end of each apple and place them on a large, lined baking tray. (You can chill them in the fridge to cool, ready for the toffee coating.)
  3. Use a heavy-based pan and add the sugar, water and vinegar. Stir over heat until boiling and the sugar has dissolved to create a sugar syrup.
  4. Continue heating the toffee uncovered (without stirring) for approximately 20 minutes.
  5. Test for the “crack stage” by adding a small amount to cold water - if ready, it should form a hard, brittle ball. If it still feels soft, keep cooking a little longer.
  6. Remove the toffee from the heat and quickly stir in 2 to 3 drops of red food colouring (if using).
  7. When the bubbles subside, dip the apples into the toffee, turning to coat and allowing excess to drip off.
  8. To set, either dunk the apple briefly into cold water or place them stick-up on baking parchment to harden.

Decorate Your Toffee Apples

  • Add a personal touch by decorating cellophane ready to wrap them up.
  • Try different food colouring to change the colour of your toffee.
  • Roll warm toffee apples in hundreds and thousands or chopped nuts for extra flavour and crunch.
