The Ben Connan blackcurrant is a hardy and tolerant blackcurrant plant, resistant to frost and mildew it is a good heavy cropper and when established can produce up to 8lb of delicious currants.
Currants are ready for picking from the beginning of July and can fruit for long periods, if you are short of space they can also be container grown.
The large glossy currants have a sweet flavour and can be used in a multitude of scrumptious recipes. Also high in vitamin C and antioxidants the blackcurrant is described as natures number 1 "super fruits". It is used to combat many
gripes and ailments including soothing sore throats, reducing high fevers and easing arthritic aches and pains.
WARNING These currants are so tasty they may not make it to the kitchen
The Jonkheer van tets redcurrant or JVT for short is a modern dutch redcurrant variety. it is a hardy plant and is resistant of many common garden diseases.
It produces large shiny bright red currants which are ready for harvesting from early july. The currants are highly flavoured and are sweeter than most redcurrants. The JVT currants go very well with fatty meats such as duck or lamb and make great jellies. Redcurrants are high in Vitamin C and B1 and are said to have stomach calming qualities. The dried leaves also make tea which can be used to ease rheumatic pains.
Red and blackcurrants make a great team and when put together result in yummy jam, summer pudding and pavlova.
