Gardening Jobs for July: 7 Simple Ways to Help Your Garden Thrive

Gardening Jobs for July

July is one of the most rewarding months in the garden. Borders are full of colour, fruit is beginning to ripen and long evenings mean there's more time to enjoy being outdoors.

It's also the month when a little regular care makes all the difference. Watering wisely, keeping on top of deadheading and giving plants a quick health check will help them stay happy through the warmest weeks of summer.

Whether you've recently received a living gift from Tree2MyDoor or you're simply enjoying your own garden, these are our favourite gardening jobs for July.

1. Water deeply, not often

Warm weather means plants lose moisture quickly. Rather than watering little and often, give trees, roses and shrubs a thorough soak every few days. This encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil where moisture lasts longer.

The best time to water is early morning or later in the evening, when less water is lost through evaporation.

If you've recently planted one of our gift trees or roses, keep an especially close eye on it during its first summer.

2. Keep picking fruit and checking for problems

Apples, pears and plums begin developing quickly in July. While checking your trees, look out for damaged fruit or signs of apple scab, which appears as dark, rough patches on leaves and developing fruit.

Don't panic if you spot it. Apple scab rarely causes lasting damage. Simply remove badly affected leaves or fruit where practical and clear fallen debris during autumn to reduce the chance of infection next year.

3. Deadhead your roses regularly

July is when many roses are producing their best displays.

Removing faded flowers encourages the plant to produce more blooms rather than putting its energy into seed production. While you're there, keep an eye out for aphids. Ladybirds usually help keep numbers under control, but a firm spray of water is often enough if colonies begin to build.

4. Move citrus trees outdoors (if you haven't already)

Lemon, lime and orange trees love spending summer outside in a sunny, sheltered position.

If you've recently moved yours outdoors, give it a few days to adjust rather than placing it immediately into full afternoon sun. Continue watering regularly, but never leave pots sitting in water.

5. Mulch to lock in moisture

A layer of compost or bark around the base of trees and shrubs helps keep roots cooler and reduces watering during dry spells.

Leave a small gap around the trunk itself to prevent moisture sitting directly against the bark.

6. Enjoy your garden as much as you work in it

July shouldn't be all jobs and no enjoyment.

Harvest herbs, eat outdoors, watch pollinators visit your flowers and take a few moments to appreciate how much your garden has grown since spring. Living gifts are designed to become part of these everyday moments, creating memories that return season after season.

7. Give climbing plants and young trees a little support

Summer growth can be surprisingly quick. Check tree ties aren't rubbing against stems, gently tie in climbing roses where needed and remove any damaged growth after windy weather.
