How do I to plant a tree sapling?
Tree saplings are a gift to the future. They play a vital role in our ecosystem and make meaningful, lasting additions to any UK garden. If you’ve never planted one before, don’t worry, our guide will walk you through every step.
Our 5-step guide to planting a tree sapling
Step 1: choose the right location
Pick a spot that suits your tree's needs. Think about how big it will get when mature, how much sunlight it will need, and how close it is to water sources. Avoid areas with underground utilities, and if unsure, check with a professional before digging.
Step 2: dig the hole
Your planting hole should be twice as wide as the tree’s root ball, but not deeper. This allows roots to spread out and establish more easily. Clear away rocks and loosen the soil at the bottom for better drainage and root movement.
Step 3: prepare the root ball
If your sapling is wrapped in burlap, remove as much of the wrapping as possible. If it’s in a container, ease it out carefully and gently loosen any circling roots. This encourages outward root growth once planted.
Step 4: plant the sapling
Place the sapling in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Backfill the hole using the original soil, pressing it gently to remove air pockets. Finish by applying a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.
Step 5: water and mulch
After planting, give your sapling a generous watering. The soil should be moist, not soggy. Top up the mulch to help retain moisture and discourage weeds. Keep an eye on the tree during dry spells, especially in its first year.
Planting a sapling is a simple act with a lasting impact. With these five steps, you’ll give your tree the best start in its new home. From choosing the right spot to watering and care, your tree will reward you (and the planet) for years to come.
